REEF FISHING (Bottom bouncing with handlines)

Reef fishing (bottom fishing or bottom bouncing) on the Great Barrier Reef is lots of fun for all ages and a favourite with many local anglers. A huge array of superb eating species are targeted when fishing the deep holes around the reefs using heavy hand lines. Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Nannygai & Sweetlip to name a few of the favourites. Charter boats specialising in bottom fishing operate daily from Cairns. The skippers are knowledgeable and highly skilled in knowing the hot spots for these fish and how to fish for them successfully. This style of fishing is most effective with heavy handlines (60-100lbs) although some charter operators will arrange for rod and reel if preferred, depending on the number of anglers onboard, weather conditions and the species of fish you will be targeting.

Exclusively charter the boat or join a shared charter (where we marry you up with other anglers). These boats generally cater to a maximum of 10-12 anglers. The exclusive charter is popular and an ideal option for sporting, business, conference and social groups and many of the local hotels and apartments in Cairns are more than willing to cook up your catch of the day either on the BBQ or in their restaurants.

LIGHT TACKLE DEEP SEA GAME FISHING

The light tackle deep sea game fishing & bluewater sportfishing off Cairns along the Great Barrier Reef is generally excellent year round, offering great action, coupled with good eating!!! Well before Cairns was acknowledged and placed on the International fishing map as "Home to the giant black Marlin" more than 3 decades ago, it was recognized as a fishing mecca for a huge variety of pelagic sportfish.

Exclusively charter an experienced, fully crewed game boat or join a shared charter (we marry you up with other anglers) for a full day targeting a variety of exciting bluewater pelagics including Spanish mackerel, northern bluefin tuna, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, cobia, giant trevally, pacific sailfish and juvenile black marlin. Extended "liveaboard" charters along with "mothership combined charters" can also be arranged.

The winter months (May to September) are best for targeting Spanish mackerel (King mackerel) and juvenile black marlin (up to 100lbs). The warmer months (October to March) provide good fishing for wahoo, big Spanish mackerel (up to 100lbs), sailfish and black marlin (100-250lbs).

Our selection of top boats

Marlin fishing at its best

HEAVY TACKLE BLACK MARLIN FISHING
(September to December)

Australia’s first “grander” landed by George Bransford in 1996, & the many “1000 pound plus” fish caught in the next few years following, established Cairns internationally as the home to the Giant Black Marlin. Each year these giant fish migrate to the 150 mile stretch of the Great Barrier Reef between Cairns & Lizard Island to breed. The area has now produced more big marlin of 1000 pounds & heavier than any other part of the world. Anglers travel across the globe to Cairns each year to experience some of the most exciting game fishing imaginable & if you are a serious big game angler, you owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Many big fish (some over 1000lbs) are caught by anglers on full day charters. Shared charters are also possible – we can arrange additional anglers to share the cost – normally kept to a maximum of 4. To charter a professional liveaboard game boat & crew is ideal when successfully targeting the black marlin – the more days you can fish, the better your chances of experiencing awesome fishing. Many marlin charters are at least 3 days in length. Large, sophisticated sportfishing boats range in size from (40’ to 64’) & are fully equipped with every comfort one may require at sea. It is one of the most popular methods of big game fishing, enabling the boats to fish later into the afternoon, offering excellent flexibility & mobility chasing the fish at different reef locations.
